Age-Appropriate Options
Baobab Blast provides age appropriate activities for your kids. The Baobab Blast program is designed to support the theory of multiple intelligences, because we know that kids learn differently. That’s why there’s a range of activities to help all your kids, no matter what age, grow.
Makes Cents
At Baobab Blast you’ll notice that the activities keep your congregation in mind by calling for materials that are already on hand, easy to find, inexpensive, or easily donated by members of your faith community. Be sure to check out the low cost materials noted in the craft guide—a ¢ sign is next to the low cost craft options so leaders can easily spot them. At Baobab Blast you get to choose the crafts to make your VBS an inspiring adventure.
Featured Activities
At Baobab Blast, activities are integrated into the overarching theme of Community and Daily Themes in new and engaging ways. Check out the activities below and see how the activities and themes are integrated.
Day 1: “Faye” the Zebra: Trust
Madagascar Music Example: At the Madagascar Music Site, kids will experience community by exploring what it means to create music together with a fun and interactive drumming activity, “Be a Blessing Beat.” This rhythmic activity reinforces the community theme of Baobab Blast by showing kids how to be a blessing to others. This is a great welcoming activity for their first day at Baobab Blast! Download the “Be a Blessing Beat” activity from Day 1.
Day 2: “Amy” the Monkey: Love
Savannah Storytelling Example: At the Savannah Storytelling Site, kids will learn about how Joseph demonstrated love and forgiveness toward his brothers. Kids use simple props to act out the story of Joseph and learn to care about the people in their families and treat them with love and forgiveness—just like Joseph. A wide variety of storytelling options reinforce the Bible story through drama, listening, moving and imagining. One great option is to use the Baobab Blast Storytelling DVD with the wacky duo, Molly and Jonah. Molly and Jonah help interpret the Bible story and apply it to what kids see, hear, and feel today. Download the Storytelling activity from Day 2.
Day 3: “Bud” the Elephant: Follow
Grassland Games Example: At the Grassland Games Site, kids will learn about the importance of listening. This Bible story teaches kids how the disciples followed Jesus when he called them. In the “Follow an Action” game, kids take turns leading the group. Kids act as elephants and follow the head elephant, paying close attention to what the lead elephant does while they learn an important lesson about how listening helps us to follow Jesus. Download the “Follow an Action” game from Day 3.
Day 4: “Sam” the Meerkat: Care
Kalahari Craft Example: On Day 4, kids learn the importance of caring through the story of the Good Samaritan, and while they might not meet anyone injured on the side of the road, they might know a person needing to be shown care and kindness. At the Kalahari Craft Site, students learn that one of the easiest ways to care for someone is to spend time with them, and this craft reinforces this important lesson. Kids will create the traditional African Mancala game from a repurposed egg carton, and kids can then play this fun game with others. Download the Mancala craft activity from Day 4.
Day 5: “Jonathan” the Giraffe: Share
Serengeti Science Example: In this Bible story, the Ethiopian became very excited when Phillip helped him learn about Jesus. At the Serengeti Science Site, kids test their peripheral vision and learn that there are many kinds of vision in the “Seeing Double” activity. They learn how sharing their own thoughts and insights can make an impact on the world around them. Download the “Seeing Double” science activity from Day 5.
